Is the student's lack of success in two subjects, despite her effort and helping others, considered a sign of Allah's wrath upon her? And is it permissible for her to seek to obtain half of the missing grade, or should she be content with Allah's decree?

Calamities may be a punishment for sins, or they may be an indication of Allah's love for the believer to expiate their misdeeds and elevate their ranks. Furthermore, tribulation raises the believer to levels that they cannot attain through their deeds. Ibn al-Qayyim explained that tribulation leads to praiseworthy ends, and Al-Albani mentioned that the severity of tribulation indicates strength of faith. Patience in the face of tribulation and contentment with Allah's decree are signs of goodness and love from Allah. As for striving to raise one's grade in an exam, it is not permissible unless there is injustice or the possibility of injustice. In such a case, striving is among the legitimate means to be taken.
