The sounds heard on the rooftop could be from the wind, animals, or devils (shayatin). To protect the house from devils, one should recite the Qur'an and Surat Al-Baqarah, make frequent supplications (du'a) and remembrances (adhkar), enliven the house with supererogatory prayers (nawafil), remove anything that attracts devils such as images of animate beings, and avoid sins. One must be patient, certain, and rely upon Allah, and not fear the devils, while avoiding sorcerers and soothsayers, as this only increases the devils' dominance.
