The Prophet ordered the killing of dogs, then forbade it, except for the pure black dog with two spots and the rabid dog. Scholars have agreed on the permissibility of killing rabid dogs and dogs afflicted with rabies, and the impermissibility of killing hunting dogs and livestock guardian dogs. Scholars differed regarding the ruling on killing other dogs, and the preponderant view is the prohibition of killing dogs, except for the rabid dog and the pure black dog. The order to kill the black dog is not an obligation, and there is no sin upon one who refrains from it, especially if killing it would cause harm to the killer, such as legal repercussions.
