What should a girl do when a young man, who wishes to marry her, has proposed to her three times, but her parents refuse to marry her to him due to the differing origins of his parents (his mother is Egyptian and his father is Shihhi), even though they hold the same nationality, and they threaten to beat her if she tries to persuade them?

The competency considered in marriage is competency in religion. Therefore, a Muslim woman should not be married to a disbeliever, nor should a chaste, religious woman be married to a dissolute man. As for competency in lineage, it is considered by the majority of scholars, but it is a right for the woman and her guardians, so they may stipulate it or waive it. It is advised to accept a person of good religion and character, even if their lineage is not noble, for "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you." If the father refuses the marriage due to lineage, the daughter must obey him.
