How can a wife and her mother be guided to religious adherence and to avoid transgressions of the Sharia, especially with the wife's insistence on khul' due to disagreement over these matters?

You should have chosen a religious wife. Now, the wife must fear Allah and obey her husband in matters that do not involve disobedience, and she should not seek divorce, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Any woman who dies while her husband is pleased with her will enter Paradise," and "If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone, I would have commanded the wife to prostrate to her husband," and "Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without a sound reason, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her." The wife's family should not corrupt her, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is not one of us who corrupts a woman against her husband."

Khul' (divorce initiated by the wife in exchange for compensation) occurs based on what the spouses agree upon, whether it is equivalent to what the wife received [as dowry], or less, or more, for Allah Almighty says: "But if you fear that they will not uphold the limits of Allah, then there is no blame upon them for what she gives up to free herself." The husband should try to reform his wife and encourage her to observe Allah's commands. If she does not respond, then it is better to separate from her. Abandoning prayer is disbelief if it is done by denying its obligation. If it is due to laziness, then it is disbelief according to some scholars, or among the highest degrees of wickedness according to others. There is no good in remaining with a woman who insists on abandoning prayer.
