What is the punishment for a woman in her thirties who compulsively steals and gives the money to another person, and spends the night outside her home, knowing that she appears to be rational in all matters except for this issue and her relationship with this young man?

The worldly punishment for a thief is the cutting off of the hand, if the theft is proven and the conditions for establishing the حد (prescribed punishment) are met. This punishment is not waived by a claim of mental illness unless it is proven that the thief is not accountable (non-mukallaf). The family of the mentally ill person must prevent her from forbidden actions, for the family are guardians and are responsible for their charges. It is their duty to teach their family matters of their religion and to forbid them from prohibited acts.
