Is the understanding that the verse "And do not give the foolish your property" means that husbands should not give money to their wives for them to spend, on the grounds that they are foolish, correct, or is it a departure from the context of the verse?

It is not correct to say that the "foolish" (sufaha') mentioned in the noble verse are women, because "safih" (foolish/incompetent) refers to anyone who cannot manage money well, whether male or female. This includes the insane person, the young child, and both men and women who are incapable of managing money. The exegetes (mufassirun) rejected this view linguistically, because Arabs do not use the term "sufaha'" for women; rather, they say "safa'iha" or "safihat." They also rejected it religiously, due to the abundance of texts indicating women's ownership of money and their dealings with it, and because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered Hind, the wife of Abu Sufyan, to take what was sufficient for her and her child in a reasonable manner. Therefore, there is no harm for a man to give his wife money to spend on the household if she is rational and mature.
