Which is better: a man who possesses only religious knowledge or a man who possesses both religious and worldly knowledge?

The better of the two men is the one who is more pious before Allah the Almighty, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, there is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for a non-Arab over an Arab, nor for a red-skinned person over a black-skinned person, nor for a black-skinned person over a red-skinned person, except by piety." The best way for a servant to draw near to his Lord is by learning what is individually obligatory upon him concerning monotheism and worship, and what is communally obligatory (fard kifayah) from the religious and worldly sciences that the Ummah needs. Combining both obligations is better. Piety resides in the heart, and only Allah the Almighty knows what is within it, for He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah does not look at your forms or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds."
