Is requesting the Lawgiver to legislate major shirk—as happened with some Companions in the incident of Dhāt Anwāṭ or with the Israelites and Moses (peace be upon him)—considered ignorance of the foundation of the religion and love for major shirk, taking into account Ibn al-Qayyim's statement that the request for Dhāt Anwāṭ was major shirk?

The request of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the Children of Israel from the ignorant is not considered shirk (definition) (polytheism), but rather ignorance of the religion, due to the Almighty's saying: "Indeed, you are a people who are ignorant" [Al-A'raf:138]. They are excused for their ignorance, just as seeking blessings from trees is shirk. However, the Companions did not commit shirk; rather, they requested it out of ignorance, and they were reprimanded and desisted, so they did not fall into shirk, and similarly for the Children of Israel. So, whoever requests an act of shirk out of ignorance, then is prevented from it and it is explained to him, and he desists and refrains, does not fall into shirk. As for seeking blessings from trees and stones: if one believes that the blessing is inherent in them, then it is major shirk. But if one believes that it is a means and the blessing is from Allah, then it is minor shirk.
