The answer

An alcoholic is one who persistently drinks alcohol. The claim of inability to quit it is not valid, because Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, differentiated between commands and prohibitions. He stipulated capability for performing what is commanded but did not mention it for abandoning what is prohibited, because abstinence is within one's capability and power. Persistence in sin increases its ugliness. One who drank alcohol once is not equal to one who is addicted to it, but both are disobedient and must repent.
