Why is a thief not given a chance to repent, and how will he work and strive for a lawful livelihood after his hand is cut off?

The cutting off of the thief's hand is a minor corruption committed to دفع a major corruption that afflicts society. This does not prevent the thief from repenting, for its door is open. Repentance is achieved through regret, a firm resolve not to return to the sin, and the restoration of rights. The prescribed punishment (had) serves as an expiation for him. Furthermore, the cutting of the hand does not prevent him from working and earning a livelihood, for many who have had their hands cut off are employed, while some with sound hands are incapacitated and lazy.
