Is it possible to repent after committing major sins such as lying, stealing, disobeying one's parents, fornication, and atheism? Is the suffering that afflicts me and my family in this world a sign of perdition? And will suicide remove the affliction from my family?

Sins do not signify destruction, for Allah has opened the door of repentance for those who transgress. Therefore, you must repent and have a good opinion of Allah, and beware of despairing of His mercy. Sins may be a cause of affliction, or the affliction may merely be a test by which Allah tries His servants. It is recommended to supplicate and entreat Allah to remove the affliction, and to do good deeds, give charity, and maintain ties of kinship, for these protect against an evil demise and increase one's lifespan. Suicide is forbidden and a major sin; it does not solve problems but leads to greater misery in Hellfire and increases the pain of the family. Righteousness, obedience, seeking knowledge, and keeping good company are among the causes of happiness.
