Are the sayings that indicate that the male gender is superior to the female gender correct, taking into account that Sheikh Al-Shaarawi's interpretation of the mentioned verses ("And the male is not like the female," "Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has preferred some of them over others," and "And for men is a degree over them") does not indicate this preference?

Scholars have cited texts indicating the superiority of the male gender over the female gender. This preference entails an added responsibility for men. Sheikh Al-Sha'rawi clarified this meaning in his interpretation of the Almighty's saying: "Men are guardians over women because of what Allah has preferred some of them over others and because of what they spend from their wealth." Thus, the guardianship (qawamah) of men is due to their toil and effort in earning a livelihood, while the woman's role is tenderness and affection; she is a sanctuary for the man. He also mentioned in his interpretation of the Almighty's saying: "And for men is a degree over them," that it is a degree of guardianship (wilayah) and authority (qawamah), which is a responsibility, not dominance.
