Is it permissible to break one’s fast on a Friday – for the purpose of pleasing one’s mother and attending a family gathering – and fast two days thereafter, while preserving the reward of fasting one day and breaking fast one day?

It is advisable to obey the mother by breaking the fast on Friday with the family, then fasting two days afterwards. This would hopefully earn the reward of the fast of David, because Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), when he became unable to fast every other day due to old age, began to break his fast for a few days, then gather and string together his fasts. The fast of David means fasting half of the time, so if one breaks their fast, they should fast a number of days equal to the days they broke their fast.
