Is it permissible to combine the intention of fasting one day and breaking fast one day, and fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, by fasting three days and breaking fast two consecutive days sometimes?
The fasting most beloved to Allah is fasting one day and breaking fast one day, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The most beloved fasting to Allah is the fasting of Dawud; he used to fast one day and break his fast one day." This is superior to fasting continuously (fasting the entire year) because it is more difficult for the soul. It is also recommended to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. If the day of breaking fast (of the Dawud fast) coincides with a Monday or Thursday, it is preferable to fast it due to its specific virtue, and this does not preclude one from being among those who fast one day and break fast one day, though there is a difference of opinion among scholars on this. However, breaking fast for two consecutive days forfeits the virtue of fasting one day and breaking fast one day.
