Plucking facial hair from a woman’s face—excluding the eyebrows—is a matter of dispute among scholars regarding the interpretation of an-nams (plucking) which is forbidden. What we believe is that an-nams refers specifically to plucking the eyebrows. Any other facial hair is permissible to remove for a woman to adorn herself for her husband, as there is no evidence prohibiting it. However, if the hair is dense, or if a woman grows hair in an unusual way, such as a mustache, it is permissible to remove it. Plucking the eyebrows is part of the forbidden nams, except in two cases: the necessity of treatment, or if the hair is excessively long in a way that is harmful or disfigures the appearance to the point of distortion.
