What is the authenticity of this Hadith: "When Adam ate from the tree he was forbidden, Allah Almighty said to him: 'What made you disobey Me?' He said: 'My Lord, Eve made it appealing to me.' He said: 'Then I decree for her that she shall not conceive but with difficulty, nor deliver but with difficulty, and I shall cause her to bleed twice a month.' When Eve heard that, she wailed. So He said: 'Upon you be wailing, and upon your daughters'" And what is meant by "and I shall cause her to bleed twice a month," and was the matter different for Eve and in previous times regarding the menstrual period?

Ibn Abi al-Dunya, Ahmad ibn Mani', Ibn al-Mundhir, Abu al-Shaykh, Al-Hakim, and Al-Bayhaqi all narrated from Ibn Abbas his statement regarding when Adam ate from the tree: "What compelled you to disobey Me?" He said: "My Lord, Eve beautified it for me." He said: "Then I have decreed for her that she will not conceive except with difficulty, nor give birth except with difficulty, and I have caused her to bleed twice a month." When Eve heard that, she wailed. He said to her: "The wailing is upon you and upon your daughters."

The chain of narration for this tradition (athar) to Ibn Abbas is authentic, yet there is a possibility that Ibn Abbas received it from Ka'b al-Ahbar's Isra'iliyyat (Judeo-Christian traditions), as Ibn Kathir narrated, given that Ibn Abbas used to take knowledge from him. What strengthens this possibility is that the statement: "and I have caused her to bleed twice a month" contradicts the usual menstrual cycle of women, which is once a month, even though menstruation three times a month is possible but rare, as mentioned by Al-Bukhari and others. Therefore, this tradition does not carry the ruling of being مرفوع (directly attributed) to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
