Is it permissible for a divorced woman whose life has been ruined and who hopes to be among those of whom the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it," to disobey her mother who refuses to study?

Righteousness towards one's mother and obedience to her are among the most obligatory duties, and disobedience to them is among the gravest sins. If your mother prevents you from going out to learn the Quran, fearing temptation or harm for you, then it is obligatory to obey her. However, if the prevention is without an acceptable reason, some scholars permit you to go out without her permission, though it is preferable to refrain from doing so out of obedience to her. This applies to non-essential knowledge.

Be keen on pleasing your mother, and you can learn at home if she does not approve. Divorce can be a good thing for a woman, and a believer does not despair. Therefore, you must beware of despair, remain steadfast in obedience to Allah, and be patient, for Allah does not let the reward of those who do good deeds be lost.
