Scholars have differed on the ruling regarding picking up a lost item (Luqata). The Hanafis and Shafi'is are of the opinion that it is desirable (mustahabb), while the Hanbalis believe that not taking it is better. As for the Malikis, they obligated taking it under two conditions: fear of it being taken by a dishonest person, and that the one picking it up does not know himself to be dishonest.

As for what is incumbent upon someone who picks up a perishable item, such as fruits and meats, they have the choice between selling it and preserving its price while announcing it for a year, or consuming it and guaranteeing its price to its owner, or preserving it if possible, while considering what is best for the owner. If the item is insignificant and worthless, it is permissible to consume it without announcement or guarantee, unless its owner is known.
