Is what the committed person feels—a lack of the sweetness of faith, constant irritability, and a constricted chest—despite their adherence to acts of worship and avoidance of forbidden things, subject to the saying of Allah Almighty, "But whoever turns away from My remembrance—indeed, he will have a constricted life"? And is it permissible to hit one's wife if she insults her husband?

We advise the questioner to frequently engage in the remembrance of Allah and to supplicate for the steadfastness of the heart upon the religion, such as the supplication of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion." For by the remembrance of Allah, the heart finds tranquility and faith increases. We also advise associating with the righteous and avoiding that which provokes anger. When angry, one should refrain from speaking, change one's state, and perform ablution if possible. And know that righteousness is good character. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, the best among you are those with the best character," and "The best of you are those who are best to their families." It is not permissible to strike one's wife except under conditions mentioned by Allah Almighty in Surat An-Nisa, Ayah 34: "But those [wives] from whom you fear defiance, [first] advise them; then if they persist, forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [thereafter], seek no means [of annoyance] against them."
