The majority of scholars hold that the grandfather’s maintenance and service are obligatory upon his grandson, unless there is someone closer to the grandfather. If someone closer exists, then the service is incumbent upon that person, or they must appoint someone to perform it. Servicing parents includes feeding them, clothing them, and attending to their needs if they are in want. The conditions for the obligation of maintenance are that the person to be maintained must be poor, the provider must have the means to provide, and the provider must be an heir. If the closest relative is affluent, then the maintenance falls upon them. The grandson may travel for earning, and the grandfather’s direct children must serve him or provide someone to serve him.
