The narration mentioned is authentic, reported by Malik in al-Muwatta. The meaning of "I think it is a girl" (أُراها جارية) is "I assume it is a daughter." This was due to a vision Abu Bakr had, or it could have been a result of perspicacity (firasah) and inspiration. Indeed, the perspicacity of faith is a light that Allah casts into the heart of His servant, by which he distinguishes between truth and falsehood. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was the most perspicacious among the Ummah.
