The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade eating the food of any Muslim except a pious one. This prohibition is specific to food offered at an invitation, not food given out of need, because eating together and socializing foster intimacy and affection. Scholars have interpreted this to mean that it does not apply to general hospitality, which includes everyone.
