What is the criterion followed by some scholars in elaborating on the issue of one who abandons prayer, such as those who said that it is either due to denial or negligence, given that there is no explicit hadith or narration from the Companions with this elaboration? And is it more appropriate to adhere to the explicit, authenticated text from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, or to the elaborations of scholars who came after him?

The issue of ruling that one who abandons prayer out of laziness is guilty of major disbelief (kufr akbar) that expels him from the fold of Islam is a matter of ijtihad (independent reasoning) for which there is no explicit text. The majority do not consider his disbelief to be major disbelief, and they interpret the disbelief mentioned in the hadiths about abandoning prayer, or similar hadiths such as: "Abusing a Muslim is a Fusuq (disobedience), and fighting him is Kufr (disbelief)," to mean a minor disbelief (kufr duna kufr).
