What is the ruling on a false witness and is there expiation for it?

Allah Almighty condemned false speech and false testimony due to the loss of rights that results from them. He says: "So avoid the uncleanness of idols and avoid false speech." And in describing the believers: "And those who do not bear false witness." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, considered false speech or false testimony among the greatest major sins. Repentance from false testimony is achieved by abandoning it, regretting having committed it, resolving not to return to it, and restoring rights to their owners or seeking their forgiveness.
