Is it permissible to break one's fast with non-Muslims such as Hindus and Christians?
It is permissible to partake in iftar meals with non-Muslims for a legitimate Sharia purpose, such as inviting them to Islam or winning over their hearts to it. However, merely socializing with them is dangerous due to its contradiction of the doctrine of Al-Wala' Wal-Bara' (loyalty and disavowal), which is indicated by Quranic verses such as the Almighty's saying: "You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger..." (Al-Mujadila/22), and His saying: "O you who have believed, do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers..." (An-Nisa/144), and His saying: "O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies..." (Al-Ma'idah/51), and His saying: "O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves..." (Al Imran/118). Accordingly, the intention behind the gathering determines its ruling.
