What is the expiation for a husband breaking his oath not to return to smoking, and what is your advice to the wife?
Smoking is among the forbidden evils, and its harms are many. Allah has made lawful the good things and forbidden the evil things. The husband must abandon smoking in obedience to Allah and to preserve his religion, his health, and his good companionship. If the husband swore to quit it and then returned to it, he must offer expiation for breaking an oath along with repentance. This expiation is feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or emancipating a slave. The questioner is advised not to seek divorce if the husband prays, has good conduct, and will quit it. However, if he persists in the sin, then there is no objection to it.
