What is the ruling on intercession (wasta) in employment, education, and the like? Is it haram (forbidden)?

If interceding for a job leads to depriving someone more qualified, in terms of academic competence and ability to bear responsibilities, then such intercession is forbidden because it is an injustice to those in need and to the authorities, and an aggression against the Ummah. However, if it does not lead to the loss of anyone's right, then it is permissible; in fact, it is encouraged by Islamic law, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Intercede and you will be rewarded, and Allah will decree what He wills through the tongue of His Messenger." In schools, institutes, and universities, if intercession results in depriving someone more deserving in terms of eligibility, age, or precedence, then such mediation is prohibited due to the injustice and corruption it entails for society.
