The characteristics of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, include those that are authentic, those that are weak, and those that have no basis. A believer rejoices at the confirmation of a characteristic for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but should not strain to prove what has not been established, for his authentic virtues suffice over others.

Among the characteristics mentioned by some accounts are: - He never experienced a wet dream: There is a difference of opinion on this, and the closest view is that he was protected from what results from the tampering of Satan. - He had no shadow: There is no authentic basis for this; rather, hadiths indicate that he did have a shadow. - The earth would swallow what came out of him: These are weak and inauthentic hadiths. - Flies would not land on him: Some scholars mentioned this without proof. - His eyes would sleep but his heart would not: This is authentic and established. - He could see behind him as he saw in front of him: This is authentic and established, though there is a difference of opinion on whether this is exclusive to the state of prayer or not. - He never yawned: This is among his probable characteristics, because yawning is from Satan. - He was born circumcised: This is a weak hadith, and his being so is not among his specific characteristics. - Animals recognized him: This has been established in multiple incidents, but there is no evidence for this recognition being general for all animals and in all circumstances. - He appeared taller than those sitting or walking with him: This is a weak and unestablished hadith.

Many scholars have mentioned these characteristics; some affirmed them and some negated them.
