What is the ruling on a person who broke their fast for 25 days of Ramadan in France and did not perform the prayers?
Whoever intentionally breaks their fast in Ramadan without a valid excuse has committed a grave sin and a major transgression. They must hasten to offer sincere repentance and make up for the days they missed. The Malikis held the view that both making up the fast (qada') and a severe expiation (kaffarah) are obligatory (likening eating and drinking to sexual intercourse). Others, however, held that only making up the fast is obligatory, and this is the more preponderant view. Everyone agreed that whoever intentionally engages in sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan without a valid excuse must offer the major expiation: freeing a slave, or fasting for two consecutive months, or feeding sixty needy persons. This expiation is by choice according to the Malikis, and in order of precedence according to the majority, which is the more preponderant view.
