The answer

For the validity of prayer, facing the Qiblah is a prerequisite. Whoever knows its direction and is able to face it, but does not do so, their prayer is invalid and they are sinful. An exception to this is the supererogatory prayer for a traveler on their mount. Those close to the Kaaba must face its exact direction, while those far from it only need to face its general direction. As for students in California, the direction of the Qiblah is towards the East with a slight deviation to the South. What is between the South and the North is considered Qiblah, and a slight deviation is permissible. Islamic law does not prohibit seeking assistance from instruments and astronomical sciences to determine the direction of the Qiblah if their accuracy is proven.
