How did Satan disobey his Lord and defy His explicit command to prostrate to Adam, despite knowing God's power and greatness? Was the reason merely arrogance, or were there other, deeper reasons?

Arrogance is a blight that has destroyed nations. Whoever disputes with Allah concerning His grandeur and might will be cast into the Fire. Arrogance means rejecting the truth and despising people. Arrogance has been mentioned in the Holy Quran as one of the greatest causes of the destruction of nations and their disbelief in the Lord of the Worlds. Among the most prominent examples of this are the arrogance of Pharaoh, Abu Jahl, and Iblis. Iblis disbelieved and showed arrogance towards Allah's command, reasoning that he was better than Adam. His defiance of Allah is proof that souls may choose destruction despite their certainty of the truth, and this is not surprising from one whose heart is filled with arrogance, because arrogance blinds hearts and insights.
