What must the couple do to repent after the husband had intercourse with his wife during the daytime in Ramadan, after she had performed ghusl from menstruation without knowing that she was obliged to fast on that day?

If a woman menstruates in Ramadan and then becomes pure during the day, and her husband, who is fasting, approaches her, then the husband has disobeyed his Lord by intentionally violating the sanctity of fasting. He is required to offer expiation for intercourse during the day in Ramadan, which is: freeing a believing slave. If he cannot, then fasting for two consecutive months. If he is unable to do that, then feeding sixty needy people. As for the wife, there is no expiation upon her because she was not fasting, but she must repent for causing the disruption of her husband's fast. As for observing the rest of the day for one whose excuse has ceased, there is a difference of opinion among jurists regarding this; the Malikis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis in one narration believe it is not obligatory, while the Hanafis and Hanbalis in another narration believe it is obligatory, along with the obligation of making up the fast as well.
