Are we astray from the straight path, and why do we say, "Guide us to the straight path," in our prayers?

The wisdom behind a Muslim asking their Lord for guidance and steadfastness on the straight path is their extreme need for it. Allah guided His servant to this supplication to aid them in treading the path of truth, and it does not mean that they are misguided. The servant is at all times and in all circumstances in need of Allah's affirmation of their guidance, their firm establishment in it, their increase in it, and their continuation upon it. They do not possess for themselves any benefit or harm except what Allah wills. Allah Almighty commanded those who believe to believe, as He says: ﴿O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down to His Messenger and the Book which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly strayed far astray.﴾ This is not a matter of obtaining what is already present, but rather it signifies steadfastness, continuation, and perseverance. He also commanded His servants to say: ﴿Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.﴾ The meaning of ﴿Guide us to the straight path﴾ is to continue on it and not deviate from it.
