What is the ruling on the forgiven trace of istijmar if it transfers to clothes or descends onto the body?

Scholars differed concerning the ruling on the traces of impurity remaining after using stones (istijmar) if they transfer to clothes or the body. The Hanafis and the meticulous Shafi'is held that it is pardoned due to the difficulty of avoiding it. The Hanbalis, according to their well-known view, held that it is not pardoned because istijmar does not purify the area. There is another view among the Hanbalis that it is pardoned, as istijmar does purify the area.

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymin chose the view that the small amount remaining is pardoned even if it transfers, reasoning that istijmar is a purifier and that the concept derived from the Prophet's (peace be upon him) statement regarding bones and dung, "Verily, they do not purify," indicates the purity of what is other than them. The preponderant view is that a small amount of impurity remaining after istijmar is pardoned even if it transfers, due to the apparent practice of the Companions and the difficulty of avoiding it.
