Is learning worldly sciences, such as engineering education, and working with them considered among the worldly matters that do not concern a Muslim? And does the heart's attachment to them represent a trial (fitna) that might turn a Muslim's endeavor solely towards this world?

Studying civil sciences such as engineering is a collective obligation (fard kifaya) upon the Ummah. Its student is rewarded and recompensed for it if they intend thereby to serve their nation. It may become an individual obligation (fard ayn) for some qualified students. The preferable field for an individual, whether religious or civil sciences, varies according to their circumstances and the needs of their society.
