When does a wife inherit nine-eighths?
The wife's prescribed share in the Book of Allah the Almighty is one-fourth when the husband has no offspring, and one-eighth when there is offspring, as stated in His saying: {And for them [i.e., wives] is one fourth of what you leave if you have no child. But if you have a child, then for them is an eighth of what you leave, after any bequest you [may have] made or debt.} Her share may decrease due to awl (proportional reduction) when the prescribed shares exceed the total inheritance, in which case the one-eighth share becomes one-ninth of the estate, as in the Minbariyyah case, which originally sums to twenty-four but awl reduces it to twenty-seven.
