Is it reprehensible to conclude a marriage contract in the month of Muharram, as I have heard from some people?

There is no objection to marriage or engagement in the month of Muharram, because the default rule for customs is permissibility unless there is evidence to the contrary, and no text has been reported that prohibits it. Scholars have unanimously agreed on the permissibility of marriage in this month. The month of Muharram is one of the revered months, and fasting in it is best after Ramadan, so it should not be considered a bad omen. As for the argument that Muharram is the month of the martyrdom of Al-Husayn ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), this does not necessitate the prohibition of marriage or engagement therein, as there is no provision in the Sharia for renewing sorrows and mourning to the extent of preventing expressions of joy. Some historians have mentioned that the first to innovate the renewal of mourning rituals in the month of Muharram was Shah Ismail Safavi. Moreover, some historians suggest that the marriage of Ali ibn Abi Talib to Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with them both) took place in the early part of the third year of the Hijra, and no scholar has denied this.
