What is the ruling on the questioner's failure to advise his family due to their repeated swearing? And what is the ruling on his family's frequent swearing and breaking of oaths? Is expiation obligatory every time they swear, given the difficulty of enumerating the many oaths? Is repentance and the resolve not to return to this matter sufficient?

The rulings regarding oaths vary according to the intention of the swearer. If oaths are uttered without intention, they fall under the category of a "vain oath" (laghw al-yameen), for which there is no expiation, as Allah Almighty says: "Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths."

However, if oaths are intentional, expiation (kaffarah) becomes obligatory upon breaking them (hunth), and the expiation is repeated with the multiplicity of the oaths sworn. The Hanbalis hold that if a person swears multiple oaths and breaks them, a single expiation suffices because the obligation arising from these oaths is one.

It is absolutely discouraged to swear excessively, to avoid breaking oaths and the necessity of expiation, as Allah Almighty says: "And do not make Allah an object for your oaths," and "And do not obey every habitually swearing contemptible person."

It is recommended to advise relatives and teach them these rulings as much as possible.
