Was what I did correct when I compelled my wife to answer and made her swear by Allah so that I might know the truth of her feelings regarding the insults she directed at me, this being to prevent doubt from entering my heart and to avoid hatred?

It is obligatory for both spouses to treat each other kindly and for each to respect the other. Therefore, it is not permissible for either of them to insult or curse the other. The wife should have been informed of the obligation of kind treatment and the impermissibility of cursing. She should also have fulfilled the husband's oath by informing him. The husband should not hate his wife for a bad trait in one aspect as long as she is righteous in other aspects, as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Let no believing man hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." And the wife's cursing may have been due to the husband's injustice towards her.
