What is the Throne of Allah, Almighty and Majestic, and is it His dominion, and does it differ from the Footstool (Kursi), as in His saying, "And eight [angels] will bear the Throne of your Lord above them on that Day," and His saying, "His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth"?
The 'Arsh (Throne) is the greatest of creations. Ibn Hibban narrated that the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O Abu Dharr: The seven heavens compared to the Kursi are but like a ring thrown in a desert, and the superiority of the 'Arsh over the Kursi is like the superiority of the desert over the ring." This hadith refutes the interpretation of those who say that the 'Arsh is dominion, as does Allah's Almighty saying: "And your Lord’s Throne will be borne above them on that Day by eight [angels]." As for the Kursi in His Almighty saying: "His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth," it was said: it is the 'Arsh itself, and it was said: it is Allah's knowledge, and it was said: it is the place of the two feet on the 'Arsh, and this is the most likely.
