Is listening to music accompanying Islamic anthems — especially those enthusiastic ones that arouse a desire for jihad and defending Muslims — forbidden? What is the ruling on my listening to this music with my husband, who is accustomed to hearing it, and how can I help him abandon it?

Listening to singing accompanied by musical instruments is forbidden according to the majority of scholars, even if it carries sound meanings, because the means must be lawful just like the end. If the husband listens to these songs with musical instruments present, and the wife cannot avoid hearing them, then there is no sin upon her if she dislikes it and offers advice, for there is a difference between one who intentionally listens and one who hears incidentally. She should occupy herself with what distracts or benefits her, such as remembrance of Allah, contemplation, or useful conversation with her husband.
