How can one overcome the feeling of self-importance that afflicts a person when drawing closer to Allah, leading him to believe that he will not enter Hellfire, which causes languor and prevents steadfastness in obedience, knowing that everyone sins?
Accounting for oneself and reviewing one's past actions for the sake of seeking forgiveness and addressing shortcomings is essential. Allah commanded it in His saying: {O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow} [Al-Hashr: 18], and Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Hold yourselves accountable before you are held accountable." If a servant does not recall any sins, or has repented and sought forgiveness for the few they do recall, then let them praise Allah and ask Him for help in maintaining righteousness. A servant's joy in their obedience and pride in it is not blameworthy unless it leads them to self-admiration or arrogance, for "whoever is pleased by their good deed and saddened by their bad deed, that is the believer." The servant must continue striving in faith, emulate the prophets and companions, study books of encouragement and deterrence and the biographies of the Salaf, recite the Quran with contemplation, and associate with the righteous.
