How is a person afflicted and tempted by their own self, and how can they be rid of this temptation?

A servant may be afflicted with self-admiration (Ujb), and the cure for this is to remember the danger of sin and its painful punishment, and to repent repeatedly whenever a sin occurs, in verification of the Almighty’s saying: "Indeed, those who fear Allah - when an impulse from Satan touches them, they remember [Him] and at once see." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no believing servant except that he has a sin that he habitually commits from time to time, or a sin that he persists in and does not leave until he departs from the world. Indeed, the believer was created to be tried, repentant, and forgetful. If reminded, he remembers." And among the most important things that help with this is remembering death, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The most frequent of them in remembering death, and the most prepared for death before death descends, those are the intelligent ones. They have gone with the honor of this world and the dignity of the Hereafter." And whoever frequently remembers death will be honored with three things: hastening repentance, contentment of heart, and zeal in worship.
