What is the ruling on making a model of a mosque for decoration?

The basic principle regarding the making of models of inanimate objects is permissibility, unless it leads to a Shar'i (religiously forbidden) consequence. For example, if the model is of something revered like the Kaaba or a mosque, and it exposes it to disrespect, or becomes a means for ignorant people to seek blessings from it. The Permanent Committee has issued a fatwa prohibiting the making of models of the Kaaba and the Green Dome due to the forbidden consequences it may lead to. If the matter is free from these forbidden consequences, such as placing a mosque model on a table and protecting it from disrespect, then it is permissible. However, if it involves extravagance and wastefulness, then it is forbidden, due to His Almighty's saying: (and do not be extravagant. Indeed, He does not like those who are extravagant) and (Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils), and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade wasting money.
