What is the ruling on wiping over short socks if they are pulled up above the ankles during ablution?

For the permissibility of wiping over socks, it is stipulated that the socks must cover the feet along with the ankles. It is not permissible to wipe over anything that is below the ankles. If the sock falls below the ankles after one has wiped over it, the ritual purity obtained from the wiping becomes invalid. According to the Hanbalis, this also invalidates the ablution (wudu’). Others, however, are of the opinion that only the purity from the wiping becomes invalid, not the ablution itself. To benefit from the concession of wiping, one must choose socks that cover the ankles and do not fall below the area of the obligatory washing.
