Upon whom is the divorced woman's maintenance obligatory, and do the parents and siblings sin if they abandon the divorced woman and treat her harshly, or force her to return to her husband?

The revocably divorced woman's maintenance is incumbent upon her husband until her iddah (definition) (waiting period) expires. As for the irrevocably divorced woman, her maintenance is her own responsibility, unless she possesses no wealth, in which case her maintenance and dwelling become the responsibility of her family, according to the order of kinship. Whoever is obligated to provide her maintenance must also provide her with lodging, based on the statement of Ibn al-Humam: "Dwelling is part of maintenance." If her rights are denied despite his ability, he incurs sin, for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is sufficient sin for a man to neglect those whom he is responsible to support." Her family must treat her with kindness and affection, for she has the right of kinship.
