Lying is a reprehensible moral trait and one of the major sins. It is a disobedience that does not expel its perpetrator from Islam unless he deems it permissible. Thus, a Muslim who lies is a Muslim by virtue of his Islam, and a transgressor by virtue of his lie. The doctrine of the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah is that they do not declare a Muslim an infidel due to a sin.
