Is it permissible to take a bone from a deceased person's grave to train with it at a physical therapy college, then return it?

The Council of the Senior Scholars agreed to limit the dissection to the bodies of non-inviolable deceased individuals and to avoid dissecting the bodies of inviolable deceased individuals, as the dissection of deceased bodies is a degradation of their dignity. Sheikh Ibn Baz said: It is not permissible to dissect the body of an inviolable deceased person, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, male or female, because it involves abuse and violation of sanctity, citing the hadith (definition): "Breaking the bone of a deceased person is like breaking it when he was alive." However, if the deceased person is not inviolable, such as an apostate or a belligerent combatant, there is no harm in dissecting their body for medical benefit.

Accordingly, the fundamental principle is to respect the bodies of the deceased and not to exhume graves, whether they belong to Muslims or non-Muslims. If it is possible to suffice with the bones of non-inviolable disbelievers, then that is preferable. Otherwise, it is not permissible to proceed with the bodies of the deceased, whether buried or unburied, because opening the door for individuals to do so is a source of evils and tribulations, and warding off harms takes precedence over acquiring benefits. If there is a need for such a dissection for a specific benefit, then an official body should undertake it in cooperation with legitimate religious institutions.
