What is the ruling on one who says to his wife, "You are divorced," intending thereby to threaten and not to divorce?

If a man says to his wife, "You are divorced," she is divorced, even if he intended to threaten her and did not intend to effect a divorce. This is because this is an explicit pronouncement, and the occurrence of divorce through it does not depend on intention. Al-Hajawi said: "If he utters an explicit pronouncement of divorce, it takes effect whether he intended it or not, even if he was joking or playing."
